Love it or hate it, Social Media is vital if you want to grow your online presence.
Anyone can do it, that’s true. But can everyone do it well?
No.
Using Social Media effectively involves planning, analysis and posting strategically. If you want to use it as a tool to grow your business, you need to change your mindset:
IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU
If you want people to keep coming back, you need to provide value. If you want to be ‘top of mind’, you need to consistently provide a quality experience.
Give and give and give, and you’ll reap the rewards long-term. Become the go-to person in your niche. Become the person that people want to follow and want to engage with because you’re a never-ending fountain of value.
But you’ve got to be quick!
With the average attention span clocking in at a whopping 8 seconds (1 second behind a Goldfish), it’s vital that you get to the point!
Be clear, concise, make a connection and stand out!
Simple, right?
While all that may sound terrifying, it doesn’t have to be.
Consistency is key
That doesn’t mean just posting every day. It means consistency in:
- Presentation
- Tone of voice
- Delivery time
- Content
- Value
Your audience should be able to easily pick your content out from a crowd (and their feeds are likely quite crowded). That happens when you use consistent colours, filters, language and delivery time.
Think of it like meeting someone new.
Scenario A
You go out to a bar with friends and are introduced to a friend of a friend. You get talking and find you have a lot in common. They’re funny, stylish and you share interests.
You walk away happy and intrigued to see them again. You agree to meet at the same time, same place the following day.
This time they show up 2 hours late, dressed like a clown and screaming at everyone who walks past.
Would you have the confidence to meet them a third time? Your time is precious, and that level of inconsistency doesn’t inspire confidence.
Scenario B
Same bar and same great first impression, but this time the second meeting goes slightly differently.
They show up wearing something equally stylish and they’re equally engaging. They remembered your conversation from the previous week and expand on it.
During the evening they share some knowledge and insight which blows your mind. This information is given away freely with no strings attached and you leave with a big smile on your face.
Which one are you likely to go back to meet? The crazy bipolar clown or the friendly, reliable, informative new friend?
While this is massively simplified, it’s basically how Social Media works.
How not to be a crazy bipolar clown
For the longest time I considered it cheating to pre-plan and mass produce content. I was in the mindset that you had to create the content that day for it to be ‘genuine’.
If you mass-produced and scheduled your posts you were somehow a fraud.
I was silly.
While being spontaneous and producing content on the fly can be an excellent way to engage with your audience, it’s not sustainable when you’re trying to run a business.
There are already a million and one things that need doing if you want to achieve greatness. Procrastinating over which hashtag to use is probably not one of them.
This is where a Virtual Assistant comes in.
A quality VA can sit down with you at the start of the week or month and together you create a winning strategy.
Spend a few days creating a ton of content and then optimise it (hashtag research is a thing and it can be a game-changer), schedule it and then marvel as you suddenly have free hours in the day to devote to other activities – work or pleasure.
